The secret to building a sustainable practice isn’t willpower or motivation. It’s designing something so small and simple that you can do it even on your worst days.
Start embarrassingly small. Not small—embarrassingly small. If you want to start exercising, don’t commit to 30-minute workouts. Commit to putting on your workout clothes. If you want to write more, don’t aim for 500 words. Aim for opening the document. This feels almost silly, but that’s the point. You’re building a pattern of showing up, and that pattern matters more than the output.
Anchor your practice to something you already do. Want to meditate? Do it right after you pour your morning coffee. Want to stretch? Do it while your lunch heats up. This strategy, called habit stacking, uses existing routines as triggers. You’re not relying on memory or motivation—you’re building on autopilot behaviors you already have.
Make it easier to start than to skip. Remove every possible friction point. If you want to read more, keep a book on your nightstand, not buried on a shelf. If you want to journal, leave your notebook open on the table with a pen already uncapped. Every obstacle you remove is one less decision between you and the practice.
Track the showing up, not the results. Don’t count words written, miles run, or pounds lost. Count the days you showed up. Put an X on the calendar. Watch the chain grow. This shifts your focus from outcomes (which you can’t fully control) to consistency (which you can).
Build in flexibility from the start. Life will happen. Design your practice with three levels: the ideal version for great days, the minimum version for hard days, and the “something is better than nothing” version for terrible days. For a writing practice, that might be 30 minutes, 10 minutes, or one sentence. All three count as showing up.
Give it time to feel normal. Research on habit formation varies wildly, but most people need at least a month before something starts feeling automatic. Expect the first few weeks to feel like work. That’s not failure—that’s just how practices become practices. The awkwardness is part of the process.
Start today, wherever you are. Not Monday. Not next month. Today. The practice doesn’t care if your life is messy or if you’re “not ready.” You build the practice by practicing, not by preparing to practice.
Your practice doesn’t need to be impressive. It just needs to be yours, and doable, and repeated. Start there.
