"If you don't have time for exercise, you'll probably have to make time for illness." Robin Sharma
That is the truth.
In order to age gracefully we MUST continue to move our bodies. And it is so important for the aging body to move the body efficiently and with proper mechanics to avoid injury. Don’t get me wrong, injuries happen AND if we are moving our bodies well recovery from those injuries is much faster and typically less painful.
As a PT assistant and massage therapist, I have seen bodies of all kinds, and what I know for sure it that no matter your age or experience, it is NEVER too late to start moving your body. Maintaining muscle mass as we age, especially for women, is critical for health span. In a recent Drive podcast, Belinda Beck Ph.D founder of The Bone Clinic in talks about her experience working with post menopausal women. In her studies, she reported an INCREASE in body mineral density for untrained women over the age of 65 after beginning a strength training program. By the end of 8 weeks, some of these women were able to deadlift their body weight, remember these women had NEVER lifted weights before.
What’s the take away?
IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO LIFT WEIGHTS!
However, if you are inexperienced with strength training and movement in general, it is imperative that you see a trained professional for guidance, specifically someone who has experience and knowledge about progressive loading of bone for peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women.
